President Xi Jinping called on the whole Party and nation to unite and strive for the national rejuvenation, as he inspected a revolutionary base in Beijing on Thursday.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, traveled to Fragrant Hills, in western suburban Beijing, and delivered an important speech there.
In March 1949, the CPC Central Committee was headquartered in Fragrant Hills. China's late chairman Mao Zedong lived in Shuangqing Villa, from where he directed the famous campaign of "Crossing the Yangtze River", which led to the collapse of the Kuomintang regime.
Xi visited the villa and some other revolutionary landmarks and viewed an exhibition on the theme of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He recalled the history of the CPC leading the Chinese people to victory and honored the glory of the elder generation of revolutionaries including Mao.
Xi pointed out that although the CPC Central Committee spent only half a year at Fragrant Hills, it was the headquarters from where the Party led the people to the successful conclusion of the War of Liberation, something of great significance in the history of the People's Republic of China.
Xi said that to honor the history is to inherit and build on the revolutionary spirit of the elder generation of revolutionaries and to strengthen confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Xi called on the whole Party and nation to be brave, to engage in the great struggle and fight against all difficulties and obstacles to push forward progress of China.
Xi urged more efforts to inherit and develop the spirit of the elder generation of revolutionaries to work for the people, keep close relations with the people, and regard the people's aspiration for a better life as the goal.
Xi called for inheriting and building on the elder generation of revolutionaries' spirit of modesty, prudence and frugality — not arrogance or rashness.
History has proved that the CPC and the Chinese people are capable of both breaking an old world and building a new world, Xi said, adding that the future of China is very promising.
