India's federal health ministry said Thursday morning that the death toll due to COVID-19 in India rose to 414 and the total number of confirmed cases reached 12,380.
"As of 8:00 a.m (local time) today 414 deaths related to novel coronavirus have been recorded in the country," read an information released by the ministry.
This is a jump of 22 deaths and an increase of 447 cases since Wednesday evening.
According to ministry officials, so far 1,489 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.
"The number of active cases in the country right now is 10,477," said the information.
Thursday marks the 23rd straight day of ongoing lockdown across the country announced by the government to contain the spread of the pandemic.
The lockdown which was announced on March 25 has been extended until May 3.
The government said Wednesday that every district of the country has been divided into hotspot districts, non-hotspot districts with reported cases, and green zone districts.
"Special teams have been set up to trace all contacts as well as to conduct house to house surveys. These teams will include the health staff, local revenue staff, corporation staff, the Red Cross and other volunteers," the spokesman said.
A "hotspot classification" would be districts or cities contributing to more than 80 percent of the cases in India. Places that show a high rate of infection -- doubling rate less than four days - will also be in this category.
