Events including the arrest of Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou and the COVID-19 outbreak have strained Canada's relationship with China, leaving Chinese Canadians feeling discriminated by other Canadians, according to an online survey released on Monday.

The survey released by the Canada Committee 100 Society (CCS100) and Innovative Research Group showed that on the issue of COVID-19, most Chinese Canadians perceive bias against their community among the media, with 52 percent saying the coverage has been biased against Chinese Canadians.

Some Canadians have said that Chinese immigrants are wealthy and are not facing the same hardships due to COVID-19, said Guo Ding, founding president of the CCS100.

However, the survey shows that Chinese Canadians have been hit harder by the COVID-19 pandemic than the general population, with 23 percent of Canadians saying they've had no negative financial impact from COVID-19, compared to just 14 percent among Chinese Canadians.

Chinese Canadians are nine points more likely to be worried about paying their mortgage, and 14 points more likely to be worried about paying rent. These gaps are even bigger among those with lower incomes and less education.

The survey was conducted on June 17 and July 6.
