Colombia's death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 28,000 Tuesday as the country reported 5,015 new cases and 156 more deaths.
The total number of infections hit 924,098 with 28,141 deaths, according to the country's heath authorities.
Dr. Gina Tambini, representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Colombia, called on Colombians not to relax amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We must not lower our guard. The theory that letting the virus go free could generate a herd immunity is not acceptable. Herd immunity is a concept related mainly to vaccination ... It is not acceptable and is not ethical, either," Tambini told a local radio station in an interview.
She said there is already evidence of reinfection, stressing the importance of biosecurity measures such as social distancing, personal sanity and the use of face masks.
