The Chinese Embassy spokesperson recently wrote a letter to The Guardianon the latter's 8 December report of an interview with Joseph Wu, which is inconsistent with a series of facts. The full text is as follows:
Your report (8 December) of the interview with an official of the Taiwan authorities is inconsistent with the following facts:
There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The Central People's Government of the PRC is the sole legitimate government representing China. This is an objective fact and a basic norm governing international relations.
People on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are brothers and sisters of one big family. The peaceful development of cross-Straits relations is their common aspiration and an irresistible trend. And the development of the China's mainland is bringing increasing opportunities to the Taiwan compatriots.
Any attempt to incite cross-strait confrontation is doomed to failure. The moves by a few separatist forces can neither change the above facts, block the development of relations across the Taiwan Straits, nor reverse the course of peaceful reunification of China.
