While the COVID-19 epidemic has shown signs of abating, a public health official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Saturday called on the public to keep their guard up as the epidemic could deteriorate at any time.
Daily new infections remained low on Saturday, with only one local case and one imported case. The tally of total confirmed cases rose to 11,501, according to Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection.
Secretary for Food and Health of the HKSAR government Sophia Chan asked residents to continue to comply with social distancing rules and avoid group gatherings.
As a five-day holiday started on Friday, country parks, shopping malls and amusement parks in Hong Kong have been packed with people. Chan cautioned that intensive social activities, if mask mandates are not followed, will increase the risk of the COVID-19 transmission.
She said people should avoid crowded areas and remain alert to prevent a rebound in infections following the holiday. Enditem
