The United Nations (UN) Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned a terrorist attack on Tuesday against a hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, which left dozens killed and injured.

In a press statement, the Council members condemned "in the strongest terms the horrendous terrorist attack," on the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital, which was claimed by the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, an Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, and they wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured," the statement said.

Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, the members reaffirmed, underlining the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.

They also called on all states to combat by all means, in accordance with the UN Charter and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
