A 23-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after he fatally shot a 71-year-old man in Chinatown on the South Side of Chicago, Chicago police Superintendent David Brown announced at a news conference Wednesday night.
Alphonso Joyner, the young man, had been driving a small two-door vehicle on a street in Chinatown Tuesday afternoon when he opened fire on Woom Sing Tse, a 71-year-old of Chinese origin who was buying newspapers on the sidewalk. While the first round of shots did not strike Tse, the second volley of shots hit Tse, who fell to the ground, local media reported.
Joyner was then seen getting out of the car, standing over Tse, and firing additional numerous shots before fleeing west. Police got 18 shell casings in the middle of the street and on the sidewalk, a Chicago police report said.
Tse was rushed to hospital and was announced dead.
With provided videos, police officers identified Joyner's vehicle and license plate number and arrested him, said Brown. A handgun and an extended magazine were retrieved from Joyner's car.
As the shooting happened just across an elementary school in Chinatown where classes were still in session, the school was immediately put in lockdown Tuesday afternoon.
Tse immigrated to the United States from China's Guangdong Province when he was young. He used to be president of the Chicago Chinese Ping-pong Association.
On the same day when Tse was shot, a grocery store in Chinatown was robbed of several hundred dollars; and two women of Chinese origin were robbed of their cars in the center and outskirts of Chinatown, respectively.
According to data provided by Chicago Police, by Nov. 1 this year, 678 people had been murdered and 3,766 injured in shootings in Chicago this year, higher than in normal years.
