The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Friday strongly disapproved of and firmly rejected the so-called Hong Kong-related resolution of the European Parliament, which smeared Hong Kong's democracy and freedom, called for sanctions against central government and HKSAR government officials, and asked for boycott of Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
The central government acted decisively in adopting the National Security Law for the HKSAR, improving Hong Kong's electoral system, and firmly implementing the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong," these measures have made Hong Kong transform from chaos to stability and prosperity, and brought Hong Kong's democratic development back on track, said a spokesperson of the office, adding that Hong Kong has since taken on a new look of sound and effective governance.
The spokesperson pointed out that there was no democracy in Hong Kong under British colonial rule, and the Chinese government is the designer, builder, promoter and defender of Hong Kong's democratic system.
"In disregard of history and reality, the European Parliament has repeatedly smeared Hong Kong and attacked China under the pretext of so-called 'democracy and freedom' for a publicity stunt," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said that in violation of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, the European Parliament once again judged others' democracy with condensation and interfered in China's internal affairs including Hong Kong affairs, which is unacceptable.
The spokesperson stressed that the Chinese people never give into coercion or intimidation. Hong Kong is part of China and brooks no external interference, nothing can change China's firm determination to safeguard the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and promote the sustained success of "one country, two systems".
The office urged some politicians of the European Parliament to follow the historical trend, change course, stop the political hysteria against China and China's HKSAR, stop bullying acts of threatening to impose sanctions, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs including Hong Kong affairs in any form.
