The last two carriages of a Beijing subway train detached from the rest of the train Thursday evening, injuring an unspecified number of passengers, according to the city's subway operator. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
Beijing Subway announced the incident on its social media platform, stating that firefighters and ambulances are at the scene on the Changping Line. Injured passengers are being evacuated to a nearby station and provided with materials to stay warm.
The incident occurred during the evening rush hour on a snowy day in an aboveground section of the line. Partial operation of the Changping Line continued initially, but the entire line was later suspended to facilitate rescue and investigation.
The Changping Line, linking Beijing's downtown area with Changping district, carries approximately 400,000 passenger trips daily and operates trains with six carriages. The cause of the detachment and the extent of injuries are currently under investigation.
