China warns United States not to play 'Taiwan card'

China on Friday urged the United States to strictly abide by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and refrain from exploiting Taiwan to contain China, a move which is doomed to fail.

Speaking at a briefing, Yang Tao, director-general of the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, elaborated China's position on the UNGA Resolution 2758.

For some time, the U.S. has deliberately distorted and challenged Resolution 2758, hyped up the "undecided status" of Taiwan and advocated supporting Taiwan's participation in UN meetings and activities.

The meaning of the one-China principle is crystal clear, namely there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, Yang said.

Noting the 26th session of the UNGA on Oct 25th 1971 adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority Yang said once and for all, the Resolution 2758 resolved, politically, legally and procedurally, the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including the Taiwan region, at the UN.

It also made it clear that there can only be one seat representing China at the UN, and no issues exist about "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan", he added.

Since the adoption of UNGA Resolution 2758, it has been observed by the UN and its specialized agencies and other intergovernmental international organizations, Yang said.

Any issue regarding the Taiwan region's participation in the activities of international organizations must be addressed under the framework of the one-China principle, he said, adding Taiwan has no basis, reason or right to join the UN or other international organizations that require statehood.

Yang said all member states of the UN should abide by the UNGA Resolution 2758, which is the requirement of the UN Charter and an obligation that must be fulfilled.

He stressed that the U.S. has neither qualification to distort the UNGA Resolution 2758, nor privilege to act recklessly.

Yang also said the one-China principle is the fundamental prerequisite and political foundation for China to establish and grow its relations with others.

The international community universally adheres to the UNGA Resolution 2758, and comprehensively and faithfully implements the one-China principle, he added.

He urged the U.S. not to stand on opposite from the international community, international justice and basic norms of international relations.

As a founding member of the UN and a permanent member of its Security Council, Yang slammed the U.S. for trampling on the principles of international law, and attempting to mislead international public opinion and impose its wrong stance on the international community.

"Is this the 'rules-based international order' that the United States chants?" Yang questioned, saying it reflects U.S. hegemony and a selective approach to international law.

The U.S. and a few other countries once put forth the "dual representation" proposal in an attempt to create "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan", but the proposal ultimately failed to be put to a vote and was abandoned, Yang said.

The U.S. must stop hollowing out and obscuring the one-China principle, Yang said, warning that the U.S. running counter to the trend of history will not succeed.

He said the U.S. claims that it adheres to the one-China policy but is using more descriptions to modify its one-China policy, including its unilaterally-concocted Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.

Such moves violate the one-China principle, breach the international consensus and have never been recognized by China from the very beginning, he added.

Yang reminded the U.S. that playing the "Taiwan card" will backfire, and engaging in using Taiwan to contain China will inevitably end in failure.
