Chinese police officers recently repatriated a man who is alleged to have engaged in the abduction of women from Cambodia to China, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Thursday.

In September last year, public security authorities in Hunan province investigated a transnational criminal group that used online social networking platforms to lure Cambodian women to China and then forced them into prostitution.

The police in Hunan were able to capture 10 suspects, but one key member of the group, surnamed Lu, managed to escape to Cambodia.

Following this development, Hunan dispatched a working team to Cambodia to conduct law enforcement cooperation with the local authorities.

On Aug 15, local law enforcement detained Lu in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and subsequently handed him over to Chinese police officers on Aug 28.

The Ministry of Public Security said that in recent years, some illegal intermediaries have exploited the guise of offering job opportunities or arranging transnational marriages to entice foreign women to China and coerce them into engaging in illegal activities for profit.

In March, the ministry deployed national public security departments to conduct an operation targeting the abduction of women and children, designating crimes of abducting women via cross-border employment and marriages as one of the key targets.

This operation urged authorities to bolster international law enforcement cooperation and combat each step, including the abduction, transportation and reception in order to dismantle cross-border abduction networks.

An official from the ministry said that the successful apprehension of this suspect represents a significant achievement in cracking down on cross-border abduction crimes. It underscores China's resolute determination and zero-tolerance stance toward such offenses.
