(ECNS) - China's Central Meteorological Observatory initiated a Level IV emergency response on Thursday to prepare for Typhoon Jongdari, the 12th storm this year.
The national observatory issued a blue warning at 6 a.m.. China has a four-tier warning system for severe weather, with red the most serious followed by orange, yellow and blue.
Typhoon Jongdari arrived 420 kilometers southeast of Zhoushan City in Zhejiang Province by 5 a.m. with maximum winds near the center of 23 meters per second.
The storm will move in a northwestern direction at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour and may hit coastal areas along an area from Xiangshan County in Zhejiang Province to Qidong City in Jiangsu Province.
From 8 a.m. on Aug. 2 to 8 a.m. on Aug. 3, there will be strong winds in the East China Sea and the southwestern part of the Yellow Sea. In the period, heavy rain is also expected to sweep the northeastern area of Zhejiang Province, Shanghai and southeastern Jiangsu.
