ECNS) - The number of short-video users in China reached 648 million in December last year and time spent watching online video clips accounted for 11.4 percent of users’ total time on the Internet, said a report by the China Netcasting Service Association on Monday.
In the past two years, the short-video industry experienced explosive growth in terms of both user population and market. In the second half of 2018, 53.95 million short-video users were added, an increase of 8.3 percent.
As the short-video market matured, the content has increasingly become more professionally made and specialized as major platforms focus more on quality in their competition, the report said.
In addition, short video, as a form of information carrier and dissemination tool, will increasingly integrate into many fields.
Zhou Jie, the executive deputy secretary-general of the association, said the development of short video had impacted many fields.
Data also showed that short videos were not simply the domain of the young. Middle-aged and elderly people were quickly developing the habit of watching video content on cellphones, with the use rate of video apps among users at least 40 years old increasing 12 percentage points in six months, Zhou said.
Furthermore, the development of 5G technology will ensure the video-based content industry continues to grow steadily into the future, achieving innovative breakthroughs, Zhou said.
