(ECNS) - Chinese authorities will introduce new policies on immigration and traffic management for Hainan Province as it builds a pilot free trade zone covering the whole island.
Foreigners with overseas driving licenses can apply for a temporary driving permit in Hainan Province valid for one year at most, a significant extension from the current three months, Wang Qiang, deputy director of the Traffic Management Bureau at the Ministry of Public Security, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Wang said making it easier for foreigners to drive in Hainan can promote tourism as well as economic and trade development.
Starting from August 1, the ministry will relax conditions for foreign drivers to receive a temporary driving permit by exempting them from health checks at hospitals. Foreigners who stay in Hainan over three months can extend the validity of a temporary driving permit up to one year.
The ministry will also offer services at airports or sea ports so foreigners can easily apply for a driving permit. Information about traffic laws and regulations will also be made available online allowing foreign drivers to take the theory test in English, French and other languages for a full Chinese driving license.
