(ECNS) -- People ordering food online have become more environmentally friendly with mandatory garbage sorting introduced in Shanghai, according to a food delivery platform.
From July 1 to 4, orders received requesting non-disposable tableware increased by 149 percent compared with the same period in June.
Sales of trash bins and bags also increased dramatically in the metropolis, which has a population of more than 26 million.
Data from an e-commerce website showed the number of trash cans sold in the city during the last week of June increased by 50 percent compared with the same period last year.
The city has assigned trained volunteers to help residents sort garbage. In Jinghuayuan community in Jing’an District, four volunteers are responsible for helping ensure the correct sorting of garbage for 664 families, for example.
During the first week of the new policy’s implementation, Shanghai’s urban management authorities issued 190 tickets to those found flouting the new rules, of which 66 percent of culprits were shopping malls.
