(ECNS) -- With the experience accumulated in dealing with COVID-19, China has every confidence that the Beijing Winter Olympics will be held smoothly and successfully as scheduled, said the country's Foreign Ministry spokesperson in reply to questions about the influence of the new variant Omicron on the upcoming event.
China appreciates South Africa has shared the information it discovered about the new variant strain Omicron in a timely manner with the world, said Zhao Lijian at a regular press conference on Tuesday.
The spokesperson said China believes that the world must rely on science to fight the virus and support the WHO in continuing to play a leading role in assisting national response and advancing international cooperation.
"The pandemic is a common enemy of all mankind. China stands ready to work in solidarity with the international community including southern African countries to vanquish COVID-19," said Zhao.
As for the influence of the Omicron variant on the Beijing Winter Olympics, the spokesperson said there will be some challenges in terms of prevention and control measures, but he also showed China's confidence in controlling the virus.
