(ECNS) -- China unveiled its National Botanical Garden in Beijing on Monday as part of the country’s plan to preserve biodiversity. With a total planned area of nearly 600 hectares, the garden boasts more than 30,000 species of plants, accounting for 10 percent of the world's total.
Based on existing resources from the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Science and Beijing Botanical Garden, the national botanical garden is divided into two areas with unified planning, construction and standards, and features key functional areas, collection venues, scientific and research platforms and supporting infrastructure.
The over 30,000 species of plants in the botanical garden cover native plants in north China, representative plants of the northern temperate zone, representative plants of different geographic regions around the world, and rare and endangered plants. Five million representative plant specimens were also collected from five continents.
At the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) in October 2021, China announced the construction of botanical gardens in Beijing, Guangzhou and other places. The State Council announced the approval of its establishment in Beijing in January 2022.
