(ECNS) -- Beijing has unveiled the first ancient tree-themed cultural Hutong in Dongcheng District. With 750 years of history, the Dongsi Santiao Hutong is one of the oldest in Beijing and home to 20 locust trees of more than 100 years old.
The ancient locust trees, under national second-class protection in China, together with the Dongsi Santiao Hutong and courtyard houses, have become a unique historical and cultural landscape in Beijing.
There are 6,754 ancient trees in Dongcheng District, including 2,377 first-class ancient trees, 4,371 second-class ancient trees, and six famous trees.
This year, the Dongcheng District Forestry and Parks Bureau will further carry out pilot work for the protection of ancient and famous trees and their habitats.
In addition to the newly ancient tree-themed cultural Hutong, Cangnan Hutong No. 14 has been listed as a cultural innovation project and will join the first ancient tree cultural community in Dongcheng District.
Dongcheng District also plans to preserve 280 endangered and debilitated ancient and famous trees in 2022.
