(ECNS) -- The opening ceremony of the first phase of the Lagos light rail blue line, undertaken by Chinese enterprise, was held in Nigeria, marking the first electrification light rail built in West Africa and one more project benefiting people's livelihood since the Belt and Road Initiative put forward 10 years ago.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari took the starting train and experienced the safety, quickness, convenience, and comfort of the Lagos light rail blue line.
President Buhari highly evaluated the important role of the light rail project in the development of Lagos. He said that rail transportation helps relieve urban traffic pressure, reduce air pollution, and improve people's travel experience, which can ultimately improve the business environment, attract investment, and promote urban economic development.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun said that the Lagos light rail blue line shortens the average commuting time from one hour to 20 minutes, which will significantly change the way of travel for residents along the line, expand the space for urban development, and help the local people realize a better life.
Major infrastructure project cooperation is an important part of the cooperation between China and Nigeria, and further cooperation in more fields is expected, the ambassador said.
The 27-km Lagos light rail blue line, with 11 stations, will improve the traffic system in Lagos.
