(ECNS) - The Qilu-Shengli Oilfield CCUS key project, China's first high-pressure dense-phase CO2 pipeline for long-distance transportation, became operational on Tuesday, according to China Petrochemical Corp.
At a total length of 109 kilometers, the pipeline can transport 1.7 million metric tons of CO2 annually from Qilu Petrochemical Company to underground oil reservoirs at the Shengli Oilfield.
It marks a milestone in promoting the large-scale development of China's CCUS industry chain.
CO2 transport via pipelines has clear advantages in terms of transportation scale, cost, and social benefits, according to Sinopec representatives.
Based on a report released by the Beijing Institute of Technology, to achieve carbon neutrality goals, it is necessary to construct a total length of over 17,000 kilometers of CO2 pipelines nationwide.
