(ECNS) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply saddened by the loss of life and property damage and injuries to people caused by an earthquake in China, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.
"He (Antonio Guterres) expresses his solidarity with the people and the government of the People's Republic of China and extends his most sincere and deepest condolences to (the families of) the victims, wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," said the spokesman.
He added that Guterres recognizes the efforts being undertaken by the government of China. The UN team in China stands ready to help.
A magnitude-6.2 earthquake jolted Jishishan County in northwest China's Gansu Province at 11:59 p.m. on Monday. The earthquake has killed more than 130 people.
