China to firmly defend its maritime rights in South China Sea: spokesperson

(ECNS ) -- China firmly opposes the interference of the U.S. in the South China Sea issue and the maritime issues between China and the Philippines, and will take necessary steps to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and legitimate interests, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Tuesday at a press conference.

Lin pointed out that as a party uninvolved, the U.S. has no right to interfere in the maritime issues between China and the Philippines.

“The military cooperation between the U.S. and the Philippines should not undermine China’s sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea, nor should it be used to support the illegal claims of the Philippines,” Lin said.

China is resolute in defending territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests and is committed to upholding peace and stability in the South China Sea, the spokesperson added.
