(ECNS) -- The U.S. bears a lot of responsibility for the deglobalization trend, said former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez on Tuesday at a sub-forum of the 2024 Boao Forum for Asia, which is ongoing in Boao of South China's Hainan Province.
"What is happening today is ready for de-globalization. I believe that the U.S. is at fault. I won't say it's only the U.S., but the U.S. has a lot of responsibility for it," Gutierrez noted.
"Once you adopt the position of political nationalism, then names like cooperation in global institutions becomes almost a sign of weakness," he said.
When you start talking about "buy America," "bring jobs back to America," and "globalization is earning us", that's partly a political process that makes using the other extreme, Gutierrez explained. "That's where the U.S. is today," he added.
It has very little to do with one party or the other in the U.S. Both parties have been very concerned and very afraid of politically embracing globalization, Gutierrez said.
"In order to go back to building a global community, we cannot have these individual nationalist policies, because that opposes our position," he suggested.
