(ECNS) -- China's first self-developed polar icebreaker Xuelong 2 received a warm welcome upon its arrival in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday.
This marks the first time in 20 years since its predecessor, icebreaker "Xuelong" (Snow Dragon), stopped in Hong Kong in 2004.
A large fleet of official and civilian ships, set sail for the Victoria Harbour at 10:30 a.m. to welcome the icebreaker amid the sounds of the Suona horn.
The enthusiastic vibe extended to the city center, with eight double-deck buses welcoming the huge vessel covered in various signs.
A water salute was held at around 11 a.m., with two helicopters hovering overhead in tribute.
A local resident surnamed Chung remarked that Xuelong 2 is so impressive, demonstrating that Chinese technology in building icebreakers is on par with that of foreign countries.
Xuelong 2 is the first polar icebreaker in the world that can break ice from both bow and stern, according to researcher Pei Jiahao. Compared to its predecessor, Xuelong 2 can reach the South Pole faster and provide all-round support for scientific research, said Pei.
The ship's entire operating system is equipped with sensors that enable its crew to timely respond to any error or malfunction, according to Wu Anchao, captain cadet of Xuelong 2.
The wheelhouse is equipped with an auto power-positioning system that enables smart navigation and research.
Hong Kong researchers may participate in future Xuelong 2 expeditions, said Ho Kin-chung, chairman of the welcoming party, as quoted by Nanfang Media.
