(ECNS) -- Many Chinese students nearing graduation have said on social media platforms that Tesla had retracted their job offers as the spring job hunting season draws to an end.
According to the students, Tesla provided each with one month's basic salary as compensation.
In China, the spring recruitment season is a prime time for companies to hire students nearing graduation. Their status as fresh graduates enables them to enter more desirable job positions through campus recruitment channels.
Therefore, students let down by Tesla complained that it would be too late to find another job on such short notice.
Serina, who had initially received an offer for an engineer position at the Tesla Shanghai factory, told China News Network that the HR had informed her of negotiations between the factory and departments in North America but to no avail.
She was further informed that all offers to graduates at the Tesla Shanghai factory had been retracted.
“I was incredibly excited the moment I received the offer last October. However, I received a phone call informing me that Tesla had breached the contract on Tuesday,” said an automotive engineering major named Ming on social media platform Xiaohongshu.
“HR sounded very disheartened on the phone, and I realized that things were heading toward the worst-case scenario,” Ming said.
An undergraduate student surnamed Li had signed a contract for a position as a research and development engineer at Tesla in Shanghai, according to Jiupai News. However, on Tuesday, Li was informed of the cancellation due to adjustments in recruitment demand.
According to The Guardian, Tesla is laying off more than 10 percent of its global workforce, equivalent to at least 14,000 roles, as the electric carmaker reacts to slowing demand and pressure on prices.
Its chief executive, Elon Musk, announced “the difficult decision” in a memo first reported by the online publication Elektrek. Tesla employs 140,473 people, according to its annual report.
