(ECNS) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveiled rare footage from the 1924 Paris Olympics on Tuesday, which was restored to color HD footage using AI technology developed by a Chinese company.
The restored historical footage vividly showcases the opening ceremony entrance of the 1924 Paris Olympics. Track and field events were the highlights of these games, and thanks to the AI cloud technology, viewers can appreciate the incredible strength, speed, and endurance of athletes from the 1924 Paris Olympics in color. The footage also reveals that athletes drank red wine as a mid-race supplement during the marathon.
IOC President Thomas Bach expressed his appreciation for the technological cooperation with Alibaba Cloud. “It showed us the pioneering nature of future AI, which will change every aspect of the sports industry,” he said.
In the past, restoring historical footage required extensive research, specific equipment, and a long time to accurately color each frame and person. However, based on deep learning models and combined with the expertise of historians, AI technology can understand color, light, and context, making the coloring of the footage more accurate and realistic.
In addition to colorizing historical footage, this year, cloud computing surpassed satellite technology for the first time as the mainstream broadcasting method for the Paris Olympics, with over two-thirds of the signals distributed globally through Alibaba Cloud and a significant use of AI technology in Olympic broadcasting. This marks a major technological advancement since satellite TV broadcasting began at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
