(ECNS) -- A flash flood and mudslide struck Kangding City in southwest China's Sichuan Province at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, leading to at least four deaths while 23 others remained missing as of 11 p.m., local authorities said on Sunday.
The disaster toppled a tunnel bridge and destroyed homes in Ridi village of Kangding, the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze.
The village is located in a valley at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, while the mountains nearby are over 5,000 meters above sea level.
Sixteen individuals were hospitalized for medical treatment, with four having been discharged and 12 remaining in hospital without life-threatening risks, according to a press conference held on Sunday.
The collapse of the bridge between tunnels resulted in the plummeting of four vehicles, with one individual rescued and hospitalized, while 10 others were among the missing, the headquarters said.
After the disaster, Sichuan Province has dispatched 291 emergency firefighting and rescue personnel, 100 traffic emergency rescue personnel, one large drone, and one helicopter to participate in the rescue. About 1,700 units of disaster relief supplies have been allocated to ensure the resettlement of affected people.
The relocation and resettlement of 939 affected residents have been completed as of Sunday morning.
