(ECNS) -- China State Railway Group said Tuesday that the national railway network is expected to handle 510 million passenger trips during the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush, reflecting steady growth in demand.
The travel period, known as “Chunyun,” will run from Jan. 14 to Feb. 22 this year, spanning 40 days. Tickets for the first day of the travel rush went on sale on Tuesday.
Peak travel days are projected for Jan. 25, ahead of the Lunar New Year, and Feb. 4, as people return from holiday celebrations.
A China Railway spokesperson said pre-holiday travel will see a surge in student, migrant worker, and family reunion traffic, while post-holiday flows are expected to be more evenly distributed.
To meet the increased demand, railway authorities have introduced a special Spring Festival schedule, expanding capacity based on the first-quarter operational plan.
Daily train services are expected to peak at approximately 14,100 before the holiday and 14,200 afterward, representing year-on-year seating capacity increases of 3.9% and 4.3%, respectively.
Additional nighttime high-speed trains will operate during peak periods, connecting major cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou with destinations including Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Nanchang. Routes between Beijing and cities like Shenyang and Taiyuan will also see expanded service.
The railway system has also improved ticketing services, introducing an "automatic ticket order submission" feature and optimizing pre-filled ticket information. Special reservation services for students and migrant workers aim to ensure priority access for key groups.
