(ECNS) -- Chinese actor Wang Xing, known by the pet name "Xingxing," has gone missing near the Thai-Myanmar border, raising widespread alarm and shedding light on potential cross-border fraud.
Xingxing, who has appeared in popular Chinese dramas such as Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact, The Tale of Rose, and Under The Skin, was last heard from on Friday while traveling for what appeared to be a filming project in Thailand, but is now suspected to have been a fraudulent scheme.
The case gained traction late on Friday when a Weibo user, Shimian Diedi (Sleepless Daddy) claiming to be Xingxing’s girlfriend Jiajia, posted a plea for help.
According to Jiajia, Xingxing departed Shanghai last Thursday, arriving in Bangkok early the next morning before heading to the border region in a vehicle arranged by the “movie production team.” Contact with him was lost around noon on Friday.
The case sparked widespread public concern and was propelled to the top of Weibo’s trending topics within hours after a wave of reposts by prominent Chinese celebrities, including Gong Jun, Zhang Yixing, and Jin Chen, who called for urgent action to locate the actor.
The disappearance has once again drawn attention to the risks of fraudulent schemes prevalent in some areas across Myanmar, where scam operations targeting Chinese nationals are reportedly rampant. Victims are often lured under false pretenses, including job offers or acting opportunities, and coerced into working in illegal scam parks in Myanmar’s northern regions. These parks are known for their high security, making rescue efforts challenging.
Actor Deng You, who shared Jiajia’s post, revealed that he narrowly avoided a similar trap after receiving a suspicious job offer. Deng disclosed his chat logs with an individual named "Yan Shiliu," who allegedly coordinated Xingxing’s travel.
Deng’s warnings have heightened concerns that the person who invited Xingxing to Thailand may have been part of a larger fraud scheme.
Chinese consular officials in Chiang Mai, as well as the embassy in Myanmar, are actively involved in the case. The Chinese Consulate-General in Chiang Mai confirmed they received a report from Xingxing’s family on Friday and has detailed the handling process for the case.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar is verifying reports that Xingxing may have crossed into Myawaddy, a town on the Myanmar side of the border, and pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
Jiajia has traveled to Thailand, seeking assistance from local police and Chinese consular staff.
According to her latest Weibo update, Xingxing's exact location and current condition remain unknown and require further verification.
