"Project Gutenberg," a crime thriller starring Chow Yun-Fat and Aaron Kwok, became the apparent winner of China's box office during the lucrative National Day holiday, according to data released by online movie ticket service Maoyan on Friday.
"Project Gutenberg," directed by Felix Chong -- known as the writer of the "Infernal Affairs" trilogy -- took in 76.11 million yuan (11.08 million U.S. dollars) in ticket sales as of Friday evening, accumulating a total of 501 million yuan at box office since its release on Sept. 30.
Zhang Yimou's "Shadow" came in second, making 39.3 million yuan on the day. It has registered a total of 370 million yuan since its release on Sept. 30.
"Hello, Mrs. Money" came in third, taking in 36.57 million yuan. The comedy, produced by rising production company Mahua FunAge, initially topped the box office charts, but failed to maintain its steam due to negative reviews. It has raked in a total of 448 million yuan in box office.
"Lost, Found," a new movie opening nationwide, took in 17.62 million yuan. A remake of South Korean film "Missing," it tells the story of how a single mother deals with the mysterious disappearance of her daughter.
Rounding out the top five was "Fat Buddies," with earnings of more than 162 million yuan since hitting Chinese screens on Sept. 30.
