Chinese travelers' ice and snow enthusiasm in Harbin city, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is a signal telling the country's growing tourism market demand and people's consumption power, which also creates new opportunities for other countries including Switzerland, said China's Foreign Ministry.
FM spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks during a press conference on Monday, responding to a media question about the head of Switzerland Tourism stating that it wanted to learn from China and attract more Chinese tourists.
During the ongoing winter season, the second winter after 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, the number of China's domestic passenger trips was estimated to surpass 400 million, and the revenue for the sector was expected to hit 550 billion yuan ($76.5 billion), Wang said, citing data from the China Tourism Academy.
"China's consumption spree during holidays, festivals as well as the current winter travel boom have strongly boosted global tourism market, and showed the country's great economic vitality," Wang said.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024 that China has a supersize market with rapidly unlocked demand, and the Chinese market, with its vast potential and growing depth, will play an important role in boosting aggregate global demand.
Wang noted that the winter tourism boom reflected China's confidence of advancing economic growth, as well as highlighting China-Switzerland cooperation which is mutually beneficial.
"China will keep exploring and releasing its great market demand, to continuously provide room for global trade and investment, and facilitate global economic recovery," Wang said.
