China has formally requested the establishment of a WTO panel on Thursday to address Turkey's import restrictions on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and other vehicles. The Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) made the announcement on Friday, during a press briefing.

Since 2023, Turkey has imposed various trade barriers on Chinese-made EVs and other vehicles, including high tariffs and import licenses. These measures are violating WTO rules, damaging trade relations between the two countries. On October 8, 2024, China referred Turkey's actions to the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism, seeking resolution, said the ministry.

The request for a panel was made after negotiations with Turkey failed to yield results, according to the ministry.

China will proceed with the litigation process in accordance with WTO rules to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its domestic industries, said MOFCOM.
