The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has received wide praise after its disaster relief efforts in typhoon-hit Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), a military spokesperson said Thursday.
"This is the PLA Garrison in Macao's first disaster relief operation in the SAR, and the troops have worked with the Macao SAR government to reduce the impact caused by Typhoon Hato and help local people resume life and production order," said Ren Guoqiang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense.
On Aug. 23, the powerful Typhoon Hato struck Macao SAR, causing grave causalities and property loss.
At the request of the Macao SAR government and under the approval of the country's central government in accordance with the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and the Garrison Law of the Macao SAR, troops were mobilized on Aug. 25 for disaster relief and returned to their garrison on Aug. 28, according to Ren.
