At least 10 people, including a soldier and four militia men, were killed on Tuesday when a reported "car bomb" exploded at a military checkpoint in Basilan, an island province in southern Philippines.
The attack occurred at 5:50 a.m. local time when a "white van" was detonated at the military checkpoint in Colonia village in Lamitan City on Basilan, according to an official on the island of Basilan and a military incident report.
"While troops were conducting ocular inspection, the van suddenly exploded which resulted (in) the death of one soldier and four (militia men) and wounding of two other militia men," the report said.
Local authorities said Abu Sayyaf militants may have been behind the attack.
