The Chinese Defense Ministry said on Sunday that the joint air strategic patrol conducted by China and Russia is a "routine program" within the annual cooperation plan and is not directed at any third party.
Zhang Xiaogang, the ministry spokesman, made this remark in a statement to refute some media reports claiming that the action could escalate regional tensions.
He said the patrol conducted by Chinese and Russian air forces over relevant areas of the Sea of Japan and the western Pacific from Friday to Saturday is unrelated to the current international and regional situation.
"This operation effectively tested and enhanced the joint training and operational capabilities of the air forces of both countries," said Zhang.
