A Sichuan Province hotel is seeking to make sure the knots tied in their banquet halls never come loose by requiring couples to first sign a statement promising they won't divorce before allowing them to book the venue.
The Huilongwan Hotel in the provincial capital of Chengdu recently made their no-divorce policy known on a giant billboard outside the premises.
"We only hold wedding ceremonies for couples who are not going to divorce. For those who think marriage is just a game, please go elsewhere," read the sign, which attracted many onlookers, media reported.
The hotel's owner told reporters that the campaign is a crusade to preserve Chinese marriages, something he says can be achieved only with more "supervision from the public."
"We only hold ceremonies for those who promise to spend a lifetime together," said the owner.
The first couple to sign the agreement was married in a ceremony at the hotel on Sunday.
The new bride and groom said that they did not fully understand the rule at first.
"We accepted it later because we want to stay with together for the rest of our lives," they said on condition of anonymity.
"We hope others do the same thing and are willing to accept such supervision," they added.
