China's top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng on Friday told youth from Hong Kong and Macao to better understand the country's situation and strengthen their national identity.
Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when meeting with a delegation of representatives of youth associations from Hong Kong and Macao, which was led by young CPPCC members from the two special administrative regions.
The delegation was invited to visit the mainland for a study tour.
Yu said the Communist Party of China Central Committee pays great attention to and cares about the younger generations in Hong Kong and Macao. He expressed hope that the delegation will help reinforce exchanges and communication between youth in the mainland and two regions.
"I hope that through this visit, young people in Hong Kong and Macao may better understand the country's history and national situation, build consensus and increase national identity," Yu said.
He also called on Hong Kong and Macao young people to expand their horizons and be more committed to the country's development and national renewal.
"Younger generations in Hong Kong and Macao are fresh forces to carry forward the cause of 'one country, two systems,' and they should be courageous in assuming their mission for the times," Yu said, urging youth to link their personal development to the future of Hong Kong, Macao and the nation.
He also told them to study the two regions' basic laws and make efforts to promote the regions' prosperity and stability.
