Iran's Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned the recent anti-Iran remarks by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as "baseless and unfounded."
The hypocritical and worthless remarks made by Pompeo were merely part of propagandist hype, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Qasemi said in a statement.
On Sunday, Pompeo told a gathering of a group of Iranian-American in California that "the level of corruption and wealth among Iranian leaders shows that Iran is run by something that resembles the mafia more than a government."
"These remarks, more than ever, reveal the utter helplessness of the U.S. government after its illegal withdrawal from the nuclear deal and its failure to achieve the goals of this unwise and one-sided move which made Washington globally isolated," Qasemi was quoted as saying by the Ministry's website.
"Such words are precisely in line with the United States' long-term policy of destabilizing the region, which is a violation of its international obligations," he added.
