Both China and the United States should manage their differences through dialogue and consultation, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.
Wang made the remarks when meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign minister's meeting and related meetings.
"Cooperation is the only right choice for China and the United States. It's also the universal expectation of the international community," said Wang, adding that confrontation could only bring a lose-lose situation detrimental to world peace, stability and development.
He said both sides should manage differences and solve problems through dialogue and consultation on the basis of mutual respect and an equal footing so as to guide China-U.S. relations to move forward on the right track.
For his part, Pompeo said the U.S.-China relations are very important, adding the U.S. side expected both the Untied States and China to succeed, and it had no intention of thwarting China's development.
The top U.S. diplomat promised that the U.S. side would adhere to the one-China policy and the position would remain unchanged.
He also called for joint efforts from both sides to strengthen coordination and cooperation on the important issues including the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
