Kenyan police have apologized for arresting Chinese journalists on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a press conference on Thursday.
During a sweep against illegal migrants, the police held several reporters and other staff members from a Chinese media office, Hua said. All the arrested personnel have legal documents, she said.
The Chinese embassy immediately complained to the Kenyan government and all the personnel were released on the same day, the spokeswoman said.
The Kenyan police later apologized to Chinese officials for the improper action and promised they will constrain officers to prevent such incidents in the future.
Hua noted that the raid is part of a move by Kenya to crack down on illegal immigration and is neither aimed at nor limited to Chinese citizens.
