Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, holds only one valid passport of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), said Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on Tuesday.
Lam made the remarks before the weekly Executive Council meeting to dispel speculation over reports that Meng had three SAR passports.
As far as the issuance of passports to Meng, all the procedures and arrangements were made according to law, Lam told reporters before the weekly Executive Council meeting.
Lam said normally the government would not comment on specific cases, but she decided to reveal the findings to "prevent ill-intentioned individuals" from using this incident to cause any harm that would affect SAR passport holders.
Meng is facing possible extradition to the United States – after being detained in Canada. China is demanding her release and an explanation for her arrest.
On Monday, a Canadian court delayed its decision on whether she should be released on bail. The hearing will continue on Tuesday.
