Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), condemned the violent acts that took place at the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government and the violence in Yuen Long.
Lam made the remarks at a press conference on Monday.
"Violence is not a solution and violence will only bring more violence," she said, adding that the violent acts challenged the national sovereignty and threaten the law and order in the SAR.
She stressed that these acts also challenged the bottom line of the "One Country, Two Systems" and hurt the Chinese people's national feelings.
"The HKSAR government will deal with these acts in a serious manner in accordance with the law," she added.
"I call on all sectors and the public to safeguard the rule of law and say no to violence," Lam said.
The Secretary for Security said that there was a trend of escalating violence at recent protests, with protesters becoming more and more brazen in breaking the law.
The police commissioner also said there were four police officers hurt during the violence on Sunday, and some police stations had to suspend their service due to protests.
They also extend condolences to the injured citizens and hopes for a prompt recovery.
