Former Hong Kong chief executive and China's top political advisory body official Tung Chee-hwa said on Wednesday that the people of Hong Kong should be rational and not allow themselves to be used by others.
If Hong Kong's situation continues to deteriorate, a long-term impact on the stability of the Hong Kong society and people's livelihood will be seen, said Tung, who is vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) as well as a former HK chief executive and the founder of the OUR Hong Kong Foundation.
Commenting on the recent demonstrations and violent incidents in Hong Kong following the proposed amendment to the extradition law, Tung suggested that while the evolution of violence and the large scale of the demonstrations seem to be loosely organized, they are actually well-planned.
There is reason to believe that there must be external forces and meddlers involved in the violence in Hong Kong, and all signs are pointing toward Taiwan and the United States, Tung said on Wednesday.
Since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, some politicians and anti-China forces have taken advantage of Hong Kong's special status, inciting the people of Hong Kong to antagonize the Chinese mainland.
