Macao has proved that the "One Country, Two Systems" principle is totally feasible and enjoys broad public support, Chui Sai On, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), said on Sunday at a reception to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

With great support from the central government of China, the Macao SAR government and people from all social sectors have implemented the principles of "One Country, Two Systems," "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy in a comprehensive and accurate way, Chui said in an address.

He hailed the steady economic growth, sustained improvement in people's well being as well as social stability and harmony in the SAR, stressing that it has shown the world the successful practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle with characteristics of Macao.

Chui, who became Macao's chief executive in 2009, will be succeeded by Ho Iat Seng on December 20.

Chui called on all social sectors to support the next SAR government and chief executive and actively integrate themselves into the development of the nation to enhance harmony, stability, and prosperity in Macao.

Chui said this year marks the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. In the past two decades, Macao benefited from the advantages of China's rapid development, and made use of it to achieve faster and quality growth of the SAR.

In his speech, he also reviewed Macao's effort over the past 10 years to promote moderate economic diversification, including seizing opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
