President of The Open University of Hong Kong Wong Yuk-Shan expressed the opposition to all violent behaviors in an open letter to students on Wednesday.
"We do not agree that violence be used by anyone to solve problems," Wong said. "Everyone should abide by the law and uphold the rule of law when expressing any opinions or taking any actions."
Wong said the university encourages students to express opinions in a peaceful and rational manner.
His remarks come after escalated violent incidents plunged Hong Kong into prolonged unrest. There have been more involvement of youngsters and more attacks on people holding different views with masked protesters.
"In a free and democratic society, we must uphold the rule of law and respect and accommodate the views of different stakeholders in society," Wong said.
