Gong Zheng was appointed vice mayor and acting mayor of Shanghai Municipality on Monday.
The appointment was made at the 19th session of the Standing Committee of the 15th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, which is the local legislature.
Gong, born in 1960, was the former governor of east China's Shandong Province and vice governor of Zhejiang Province.
He also previously worked with the General Administration of Customs.
The meeting also accepted the resignation of Ying Yong as mayor of Shanghai.
Back in February, Ying Yong was appointed secretary of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), replacing Jiang Chaoliang.
