Japan on Monday lifted the state of emergency that was still in place for five prefectures, which includes Hokkaido, Tokyo and three prefectures surrounding the capital.
This put a complete end to the state of emergency that began on April 7.
Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday met with key cabinet members. They discussed infection trends and the medical capacity in the prefectures.
Based on that information, the ministers concluded the number of infections had declined and conditions in the healthcare system had improved.
