Matthew Cheung, chief secretary for administration of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), on Tuesday denounced the U.S. sanctions on four Chinese officials as "barbaric" and "unacceptable."
Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, Cheung described Washington's move as "barbaric interference" in the affairs of China and the HKSAR.
Cheung's remarks came after the U.S. on Monday imposed sanctions on four more Chinese officials.
