China has always played a constructive role in the Middle East, never intending to make geopolitical gains, still less to fill a so-called "power vacuum", State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday.
Some major countries outside the Middle East have vied to intervene in the region's affairs, harming the region and its people, Wang said, adding such a situation should not go on.
"The power to protect security and development in the Middle East must be returned fully to the people in this region," Wang said. "We should support Middle Eastern countries in accomplishing peace through solidarity, stability through self-renewal and development through cooperation."
